Abstract

The most important diagnostic of microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma of uterine cervix is superficial stromal invasion of tumor tissue with basement membrane disruption. The author studied the basement membrane alterations on PAS stain and
immunohistochemcal stain for type IV collagen, which is one of the major component of basement membrane, in 16 cases of microinvasive squamous cell carcinoma of cervix. Three invasive carcinoma and four intraepithelial neoplasm (CIN) cases are
included
for comparison.
All microinvasive and invasive carcinoma cases showed warious alterations of basement membrane as focal loss, fragmentation, blurring and irregular thickening but uniform thin continuous linear pattern is observed in all CIN cases, which support
the
basement membrane alteration is the distintive feature of stromal invasion. Immunohistochemical study using type IV collagen antibody revealed more detailed basement membrane alterations than PAS stain.
